Help your little ones eat better

Trying to get our kids to eat well can be very challenging and even more challenging when they have allergies or food intolerances. Kids who won’t eat, or won’t eat much, cause many parents a real worry. When our chefs cook for kids, nutrition is the top priority in meal planning. We know that a healthy diet helps children grow and learn. It also helps prevent obesity and weight-related diseases, such as diabetes.

Every parent has heard that kids should be eating a "balanced diet" but a balance of what? Your kids want dessert and candy and you want protein and vegetables.

Its a very complex subject, but you can help by limiting fast food and junk food, choosing healthy sources of protein, such as lean meat, nuts, and eggs, make half of what is on your child's plate fruits and vegetables, Broil, grill, or steam foods instead of frying them and reduce refined grains.

Eating behaviours have been shown to track throughout childhood and into adulthood—so it is vitally important that kids are exposed to fruits and vegetables early in life to inform healthy eating as they grow into adolescence and adulthood.

To encourage kids to eat well be creative and be a role model, Introduce new foods slowly and get your kids involved in the cooking, dont separate kids and adult meals, instead of dishing out a serving for your kid, leave dinner on the table in platters and bowls, allowing them to build their own plate and keep ingredients separate, it’s important for young kids to have a chance to taste individual foods on their own.

One important part of helping encourage kids to eat is to start with how you talk about food. We talk about healthy food making our bodies strong, that they’ll be able to go higher on the swings, run faster on the playground. It’s important to focus on issues that they care about — 'heart health' isn’t going to register to a 5-year-old.
